Chadwick Boseman was an American actor known for the portrayals of Jackie Robinson in ’42’ and James Brown in ‘Get on Up.’ He also portrays the Marvel Cinematic Universe superhero Black Panther.

Who Was Chadwick Boseman?

 

Before landing gigs on TV shows like Lincoln Heights, Chadwick Boseman had early success as stage actor, novelist, and director. Boseman’s big screen portrayals of two African American icons broke through: baseball player Jackie Robinson in 42, and soul singer James Brown in Get on Up. Boseman later played the role of Black Panther for a number of Marvel Superhero movies, including the highly popular early 2018 Black Panther.

 

Career and Early Life of Chadwick Boseman

 

Born in 1976 in South Carolina, Chadwick Aaron Boseman went on to attend Howard University in Washington , D.C., there he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in directing. He then attended the Academy of British American Drama in Oxford , England.

Boseman ‘s works include Breathe, Romeo and Juliet, Bootleg Blues, Zooman, and Willie’s Cut and Shine in a variety of stage productions. He was awarded a AUDELCO prize for his role as teen E.J. In 2002 ‘s Urban Transitions: Loose Blossoms, Ron Milner’s play about a poor African American family drawn in by the fast cash lure. He was also part of the Hip Hop Theater Festival and wrote Hieroglyphic Graffiti, Deep Azure and Rhyme Deferred films. Boseman will land his next prominent role as Muslim sergeant Graham McNair on the 2010 NBC summer thriller Persons Unknown. On the series, an unknown entity kidnaps seven people and traps them in a town. Boseman landed additional guest appearances on the Justified series, Detroit 1-8-7, Fringe and Castle the following year.

 

 

In 2012 Boseman played the leading role in Mischa Webley ‘s film The Kill Spot. The indie production revolves around the life of a Portland, Oregon, taxi driver who is also a veteran of the Iraq War, plagued by memories of his past and hired by a private corporation for a new mission.

Playing Jackie Robinson in ’42’

In the Jackie Robinson biopic 42, which tells the story of the iconic baseball player who broke racial barriers by being the first African American to play in the majors in the 20th century, Boseman won the lead role at about the same time. The film, written and directed by Brian Helgeland, was released in 2013, co-starring Harrison Ford as Brooklyn Dodgers executive branch Rickey.

“I’m overwhelmed by it,” Boseman said of his role as the baseball hero to the online publication Madame Noire. “It’s such an immense task. I wake up every morning, work and plan for it, and I’m having the time of my life, playing baseball … watching video. Boseman ‘s career went on to take off after his starring role in 42. In February 2014, the National Association of Theatrical Owners called him the Male Star of Tomorrow. Boseman then starred with Kevin Costner and Jennifer Garner in the 2014 Football film Draft Day.

Taking in ‘Get on Up’ on James Brown

In the meantime, Boseman worked on another high-profile project: he signed on to play music legend James Brown in Get on Up, a story that producer Brian Grazer had been trying to bring to the big screen for several years. He eventually managed to get the movie going with Mick Jagger ‘s help.

Boseman next appeared in Gods of Egypt (2016), playing the god of wisdom, Thoth. He then starred in the King’s revenge thriller Message which premiered later that year at the Toronto Film Festival.

Boseman has entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2016 with his role in the epic superhero team Captain America: Civil War. He played T’Challa, king of Wakanda’s African nation, who becomes the mighty Black Panther.

Following a return to the dramatic fare with Thurgood (2017), about a case early in Justice Thurgood Marshall’s legal career, Boseman was ready for his Black Panther super-hero closeup. The film not only broke box office records upon its release in February 2018, raking domestically in an unprecedented $218 million over the four-day President’s Day weekend, it went on to win a Best Picture nomination for the Academy Award.

 

Boseman’s Black Panther later joined on screen for Avengers Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and other Marvel cohorts: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers : Endgame (2019).

Boseman, who played the title character in the groundbreaking 2018 Marvel movie, has also been a colleague and a mentor for his Black Panther family. His Black Panther co-stars started sharing tributes to the fallen hero as news of his death began to sink in.

Angela Bassett, who played Boseman ‘s mother in the film, shared a touching story about her personal relationship with Boseman. It goes back over a decade before they starred together in Black Panther when she was awarded an honorary degree from Howard University, and that day Boseman was the student assigned to escort her.

Death of Chadwick Boseman

 

Boseman died from colon cancer on 28 August 2020. “We acknowledge the passing of Chadwick Boseman with unmeasurable sadness,” read a message posted on his social media accounts. “In 2016, Chadwick was diagnosed with stage III colon cancer and has been battling it for the last four years as it progressed to stage IV. Chadwick, a true survivor, has persevered through it all and given you several of the films you’ve grown to enjoy so much.”

“A true warrior, Chadwick persevered through it all and gave you many of the movies you’ve grown to enjoy so much,” he said in a statement from his family. “From Marshall to Da 5 Bloods, Ma Rainey ‘s Black Bottom from August Wilson and a few more — all filmed during and during countless surgeries and chemotherapy. Bringing King T’Challa to life in Black Panther was his career’s honour. He died at home, beside his wife and family,
